Natural History Magazine w/ Eddie Aikau Cover | August · September 1969

Natural History magazine was founded at the turn of the 20th century (1900) by the American Museum of Natural History in New York as The American Museum Journal. In 1919 it was renamed Natural History, and remains in publication to this very day.

In its century-and-a-quarter run, the periodical has covered the people and culture of Hawaii on many occasions, but rarely ventured into surfing until its August · September issue in 1969. And when it did, it went big, featuring none other than Eddie Aikau riding Waimea Bay on the cover. The issue boasts an impressive 9-page exploration of Polynesian surfing, showcasing sketches from the 1800s through to dynamic color photos of the 1960s. It’s a great read and a great addition to the ever-growing SMH ephemera collection.
