Surf Museum Hawaii has acquired an excellent condition contest program for the 9th annual International Surfing Championships at Makaha Beach, circa 1962.
The annual competition was put on by the Waikiki Surf Club (the real one) and was the first recognized surfing competition to designate a world champion, albeit unofficially. The International Surfing Championships ran from 1954 to 1971.
The program is more of a magazine. Beyond the expected contest info, each yearly edition featured articles and ads from surfboard brands and local products/businesses on Oahu. The back cover of the 9th annual program / magazine features a full page advertisement for Hobie Surfboards. Hobie played a significant role in the development of surf industry retail on the mainland and in Hawaii, while Hawaii also contributed to the development of the Hobie brand. You can read more about the Hobie Surfboards history in Hawaii right here. Otherwise, enjoy a few photos of this beautiful vintage program below.
