Paradise of the Pacific Hawaii w/Duke Kahanamoku Cover | Vol 73 No.7 1961

Paradise of the Pacific Hawaii was a periodical/magazine promoting tourism and investment in Hawaii. The last king and penultimate monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, King Kalakaua, granted a royal charter to begin publishing Paradise of the Pacific in 1888. It ran until 1966 as the predecessor to HONOLULU Magazine, the latter of which can be found today at supermarkets in Hawaii in addition to select locations across California, Arizona and Nevada (the 9th island).

While a number of issues showed surfing on their covers in varying degrees, the most sought after is a rare Volume 73 Number 7 (1961) release featuring Duke Kahanamoku on the cover. The Waialae-Kahala subscriber address near Diamond Head adds an element of local interest, making it an ideal addition to Surf Museum Hawaii’s growing ephemera collection.
