New to the SMH surfing ephemera collection, is this highly sought after Surfers Annual, published by Greg Noll in 1960 with illustrations by Rick Griffin.
Despite spending his formative years in Manhattan Beach in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, Greg Noll made a name for himself in Hawaii in the late 1950s and throughout the 60s, riding big winter swells of Makaha, Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline, and Sunset Beach. During this period he also opened and operated the Greg Noll Surfcenter at 1235 Kapiolani Boulevard in Honolulu. Meanwhile, illustrator Rick Griffin (discovered by Noll) was just getting started when he penned the pages of the Surfers Annual booklet. Griffin’s work with Greg Noll caught the attention of editor, author, filmmaker and artist, John Severson. Severson founded The Surfer (which became Surfer Magazine) and together with Rick Griffin introduced surfing’s most iconic character, Murphy, to the masses via the cover of The Surfer’s August-September 1962 issue.
Da’ Bull’s affinity with the Hawaiian islands is felt throughout this fun piece of surf history, and we’re stoked to have it in the SMH collection.
