Surf memorabilia is a broad category of vintage surfing collectibles that encompasses the rare and unusual artifacts that don’t fit neatly into traditional collecting categories such as vintage surfboards, vintage surf magazines, vintage surf posters, or vintage surfing books. Instead, surf memorabilia includes the distinctive pieces of surfing history that capture the culture, lifestyle, and evolution of the lifestyle or sport—from club plaques, badges, decals, and trophies to event programs, membership pins, promotional displays, retail signage, and other ephemera. These are the objects that tell the story behind surfing’s formative decades and are often among the most difficult items for collectors to locate due to their limited production, specialized use, and low survival rates.
Within the vintage surf collecting community, an item generally qualifies as surf memorabilia if it predates the 1980s, with the most desirable examples dating from surfing’s golden era between the 1930s and the late 1960s. Unlike modern collectibles that were often produced in large quantities for a mass market, authentic surf memorabilia was typically created for clubs, competitions, surf shops, manufacturers, or special events, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce. Because of their rarity, historical significance, and direct connection to surfing’s pioneering years, these antiquities have become an increasingly sought-after collecting category, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to preserve and own tangible pieces of surf history that extend well beyond surfboards themselves.
While Surf Museum Hawaii (SMH) maintains a permanent collection for exhibition, we also offer a select items that fall under the category of “surf memorabilia for sale,” featured below. In most cases, collectors are required to submit an inquiry before making a purchase so we can help protect the integrity of each item’s place within surf collecting culture. In other words, we weed out resellers!
