George Downing Honolulu City & County Lifeguard Surfboard 11′
$2,500.00
At 11 feet, this George Downing-shaped surfboard is an impressive piece of Hawaiian surfboard design with plenty of visual impact. The unusual reddish-orange and clear two-tone finish, exposed redwood stringer, and large Honolulu City & County Lifeguard emblem give it an unmistakable period character that looks fantastic on display. Authenticated by Barry Morrison (Inter-Island Surf Shop) and Randy Rarick as a George Downing-shaped board, it combines rarity with an exceptionally graphic presentation. Whether displayed in a private collection, Honolulu hotel or resort, surf-themed interior, or film and television setting, this is the kind of vintage board that commands attention from across the room.
Few names in Hawaiian surfing carry the historical weight of George Downing. Born and raised in Honolulu, Downing became one of Hawaii’s great watermen—a pioneering big-wave surfer, innovative board designer, shaper, mentor and longtime Waikiki Beach Boy. He was also an important figure in the evolution of Waikiki’s beach culture, eventually establishing his own Kūhiō Beach Center concession in 1961, an independent beach operation that was not simply an extension of one of Waikiki’s famous hotels. His influence stretched far beyond surfing; Downing helped shape the culture, business and character of Waikiki while earning a reputation as one of Hawaii’s most knowledgeable and respected surfers.
This 11-foot George Downing Honolulu City & County Lifeguard surfboard, authenticated as a George Downing-shaped board by both Barry Morrison and Randy Rarick, is a particularly striking example of his work. The two-tone reddish-orange and clear finish, prominent redwood stringer, and wonderfully eye-catching City & County Lifeguard emblem give the board a visual presence that is difficult to overlook. While its Downing pedigree and municipal lifeguard connection make it an exciting acquisition for a serious vintage surfboard collector, its bold graphic character and distinctly Hawaiian provenance also make it ideally suited for a Honolulu hotel or resort, interior-design project, restaurant or hospitality space, or film and television prop collection seeking an authentic piece of Hawaii’s surfing past. This is more than an old surfboard—it is a substantial piece of Honolulu beach culture and George Downing history, preserved in a form that looks as good on a wall as it does in a serious surfboard collection.
