Rick Surfboards Barry Kanaiaupuni Model Pintail Mini-Gun

$750.00

Few surfboards capture the changing character of late-1960s surfing quite like this 8’4″ Rick Surfboards Barry Kanaiaupuni Model. With its elongated pintail, single fin, and compact minigun proportions, the board occupies that fascinating middle ground between the longboard era and the shortboard revolution that was rapidly reshaping surfing. Rick Stoner and Phil Becker were the primary shapers behind the Rick Surfboards label during this important period, when increasingly refined designs were being developed for more demanding waves. This particular board has been preserved in the InterIsland Surf Shop collection for decades, giving it a provenance that adds another layer to its appeal. It is in fair condition and will need restoration before returning to the lineup, but for collectors, that also makes it an intriguing project rather than simply a display piece. Most importantly, it remains an authentic artifact from the moment when miniguns were emerging as serious weapons for Hawaii’s heavier surf—and it is being offered at a price that makes this piece of transition-era surf history unusually accessible.

The late 1960s were a pivotal moment in surfboard design, and Rick Surfboards, founded by South Bay pioneer Rick Stoner, was right in the middle of the transition from traditional longboards to shorter, more specialized shapes. Stoner and longtime Rick shaper Phil Becker were central to the label’s shaping legacy, with Becker becoming particularly influential as Rick Surfboards moved deeper into the Transition Era. Among the company’s best-known designs was the Barry Kanaiaupuni Model, represented here by this 8’4″ single-fin pintail minigun. The shape reflects the period when surfers were beginning to point smaller boards into heavier waves, particularly around Oahu. This example is in fair condition and requires some repair before it can be ridden, but its importance as a transitional-era surfboard remains. It has spent decades in the InterIsland Surf Shop collection and can now be acquired at a very reasonable price—a compelling opportunity for anyone interested in the evolution of surfboard design and the boards that helped bridge the longboard and shortboard eras.
