Old Vintage Wood Surfboard | 11′ Makaha Plank

$3,000.00

This wonderfully unrestored vintage wooden surfboard was crafted in the 1920s–1930s on the west side of Oahu, where it was ridden and enjoyed by multiple generations of wave riders. It has been a part of the Inter-Island Surf Shop Collection for decades, and remains in its original condition, complete with the weathered wear and tear one would expect from a well-loved board approaching a century old. This “Makaha Plank” is being sold in as-is condition, but when properly cared for and admired in its new home, it will appreciate in value as the years pass.

Long before Makaha became internationally recognized as one of Hawaii’s great surfing destinations, the west side of Oahu was home to generations of Hawaiian wave riders who understood the coastline, its swells, and its breaks intimately. Makaha in particular would eventually become synonymous with big-wave surfing and the resurgence of interest in traditional Hawaiian surfing, but its importance reaches much further back. The long, solid wooden boards used by earlier generations were not merely recreational objects; they were part of a deeply rooted Hawaiian relationship with the ocean, built around reading waves, knowing the coastline and passing knowledge from one generation to the next. This vintage wooden “Makaha Plank,” dating to the 1920s–1930s, is a tangible survivor from that earlier chapter of west Oahu surf culture. Its heavily weathered surface and original condition tell a story that a newly restored board simply cannot replicate. Having been ridden by multiple generations on the west side, it carries the kind of local history and authentic Hawaiian provenance that makes these early wooden boards particularly compelling to collectors. Offered in as-is, unrestored condition, it is an opportunity to preserve a genuine piece of Makaha’s surfing past while allowing its next caretaker to become part of the board’s continuing story.
