Mark Cunningham Found Art

Mark Cunningham is a former North Shore, Oahu, lifeguard and the world’s best bodysurfer. But over the last decade he has also gained renown as an artisan. Mark gets a helping hand in creating his work from two sources. One, is the collective of surfers and seafarers who have lost their fins and things in the sea throughout the years. The second, is the Hawaiian pacific, which through the passage of time has rolled, tumbled, tucked (into the reef) and calcified these lost items, awaiting the keen eye and lung capacity of a deep diving Cunningham who rescues them from Davy Jones’ locker. The reef-comber hauls these sunken treasures to shore and affixes them to reclaimed wood, slabs of concrete, and other surfaces that Mark has earmarked for future display. The focal point of each piece has it’s own story, history, and mana, making Cunningham’s work as ideal for a museum as it does for contemporary art gallery. Surf Museum Hawaii is honored to showcase this legends work below in a virtual exhibition.
