New Acquisition: World Outlook Magazine May 1920 Featuring Hawaiian Surfer

World Outlook magazine was created and published by Willard Price, a Methodist leader, writer, and editor who was born in 1887. Price had a penchant for travel and adventure which was reflected in his creation of World Outlook. Known for its large, artfully created, colorful, and culturally enriching covers, World Outlook was relatively short lived, The monthly magazine published Volume 1, No. 1 in January of 1915, with the final Volume 6, No. 9, being published in October of 1920. The magazine closed out its final year with what is widely recognized as the first full-color magazine cover to feature a Hawaiian surfer. The cover art was the work of American painter, illustrator, and writer Remington Schuyler (1884–1955). Schuyler was renowned for drawings and paintings depicting Native American Indian lore. It was his understanding of, and respect for, indigenous cultures that made him the ideal candidate to capture the essence of a Hawaiian surf rider in the early 20th century.

Surf Museum Hawaii (SMH) is stoked to add this important issue to our ephemera collection.
